Short Stories Big City
Concept/ Text/ Stage direction: Despοina Kapetanaki
" Keine klassischen Dialoge, kein Plot, keine Charaktere.
“Short stories, Big city" is an original new work, developed entirely by Experimental Theatre Studio.
Inspired by everyday life, street images and human interaction in a contemporary big city, the piece examines today's reality in a sociopolitical context.
Starting from a basic script, without a pre-written text, we developed, through physical and vocal improvisations, a stream of episodes, which are based, primarily, on movement. Speech is used, when it is necessary, usually in the form of a monologue addressed directly to the audience and in various languages: German, English, Greek.
There are no traditional dialogue scenes, nor plot, nor "characters".
A very important aspect of the approach is the minimum use of technical means: by eliminating what is not absolutely necessary, we focus on the essential, which is the actor, the audience and the communication between them. For this reason, apart from the absolutely necessary props, there is no other technical equipment nor specific set.
The performance is happening under natural sunset light and all sound and images are created by the actor's body and voice. Moreover, the traditional theatre stage has been removed, in order to explore the actor - audience relationship and how their communication is affected under certain spatial circumstances.
This way, the spectator becomes a crucial element of the performance.
"Short Stories BIg City" premiered on the 31st of January 2014, as part of the bi-annual Uni -Theater Festival in Bielefeld University, Germany.
In July 2014 the site-specific version of the project was performed on the deck of the Parkhaus am Hauptbahnhof, Bielefeld, sponsored by Kulturamt Bielefeld and the Aesthetisches Zentrum of Bielefeld University.
